Wanting to be right
Superman’s weakness is kryptonite.
He knows that kryptonite is his weakness. Knowing that it is his weakness allows him to watch out for it. If Superman were to come upon a giant field of kryptonite, would he wander into it? Obviously not.
One of my weaknesses is wanting to be right.
Since I know about this weakness, I can be watchful. If it shows up, I can make choices that help redirect me into more useful ways of dealing with the situation.
Wanting to be right is a weakness because it can blind me to the possibility that I might be wrong...or at least that my current way of understanding things may not be the most useful or skillful...
And holding on to my idea of what is right in such a situation can be problematic in lots of ways.
For one thing, if I am certain that I am right, but I am headed into destruction, holding on to my delusion will only result in harm.
For another, even if I am “right” in a certain respect, if holding on to my rightness as being EXCLUSIVELY right could harm my relationships with others and also slow my own development.
So it is useful for me to be aware of this weakness and to notice when it creeps up.
And, as I said, then I can choose more useful ways of dealing with the situation.
I find that the first and most important thing is awareness. I have to be aware that the weakness exists. I have to be aware of the signs of it. And I have to be aware of the pain of indulging it.
Simple self-reflection can help with that.
Then, in the moment when I recognize the presence of the weakness, I need to maintain that awareness so that I can choose differently rather than indulging the familiar habit.
And for that, I find breath awareness to be highly valuable.
